About the Mega-Beast Death-Match |
The Mega-Beast Death-Match [MBDM] (sometimes called the Super-Animal Death-Match) is an interactive, voter-driven competition pitting scientifically altered bestial battlers against one another in pretend fights to the death. It is presently entering its fourth "season" (AKA distinct year of unique beasts and associated podcasts). The MBDM arose in 2007 from the chippy back and forth of Norm Sherman, Luke Coddington, and Kendall Marchman (editors of the Drabblecast) over season 1 competitors Telephant, Deathmole, Hippopotopain, and Crablooey. Alcohol was often involved. Soon after artist, designer and web guy Bo Kaier came aboard and the MBDM took shape. These four individuals, along with iron-deficient stalwart Adam Carvin appear on the MBDM podcast. Alcohol is often involved. What's the Point? The competition's primary goal is to induce pointless, "sweet" discussion about super powered animals fighting. Also to drag as many confused bystanders in to that discussion as possible. It could be compared to a less structured, community generated Dungeons and Dragons campaign, though with sore mouse clicking fingers rather than 'dice wrist.' What Does it Cost? The MBDM is completely free, with no sinister advertising goals (other than to introduce beast enthusiasts to the Drabblecast proper). A purchasable keepsake does exist in the Mega-Beast Death-Match Trading Cards, which collect competitors from seasons 1, 2 and 3 and give them a fancy full color treatment, with detailed statistics. A lack of access to these cards and the information contained on them in no way hinders participation in season 4, or really any aspect of MDBM. Where Can I Access the MBDM Podcast?Subscribe to the podcast via Feedburner or iTunes. Or access old episodes via the Drabblecast's MBDM archive. What's a Drabblecast? The Drabblecast is a free, listener-supported, weekly short fiction podcast, narrated by Norm Sherman. It features strange stories by strange authors, for strange listeners. The Drabblecast does not directly relate to the Mega-Beast goings-ons, but shares a spirit (and staff). Visit Drabblecast.org to learn more. Who are You People?Norm Shermanis best known as the voice of the Drabblecast and as a co-host of the popular EscapePod speculative fiction podcast. He is a writer, musician, humanitarian, squid hunter and male model. Learn more about his ever provocative existence at normsherman.com, also buy his CD at CDBaby.com.Bo Kaieris a scum bag. He also wrote this copy, and feels weird speaking of himself in the third person. Ok, no he doesn't. Bo creates the artwork used in the MBDM, and maintains the web site (along with IT professional Chris Ruddy). He is a concept contributor, appears on the podcast, and leads lively discussions on the drabblecast forums. Check out more of his artwork here. Become his friend here.
